12:46 pm - I still exist. Hi folks. Just so you know, I still exist. I have just finished university and am currently preparing for entry in to that 'big, bad world' thing that everyone keeps talking about.
I maintain a daily blog which I try and post to often. It's a fair bit more convenient for me than LiveJournal and other similar sites. You can find it at tom.opiumfield.com/blog/. I have set up a LiveJournal syndication feed at tommorris_feed. There are a lot of updates posted on there, so be prepared. I also can't promise that I'll respond to comments posted on tommorris_feed, while comments posted on the comments area on my blog or emailed directly to me will be responded to quickly (my email address is listed on my blog).

06:00 pm Just making you aware of a creative commons/public domain project that I am starting - it's an 'open source' audiobook project. The aim is to get people to all read out a segment of a book in order to construct a full audiobook which would be released under a copy left licence - either a CC one, or similar (that's up for discussion). If you are interested, give me a shout!

03:18 am - On Liberty Okay, I'm trying to get the word out about an audiobook project where we I'm hoping to get lots of people to all read out a chunk of John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty" and turn it in to an MP3 file. Then it'll be put together in to an audiobook, which will be released under a copyleft licence so as to let people do what they want with it. If you are interested, give me a shout.

11:07 pm - Nicked from wibbble... The scores are from 0 (not you at all) to 100 (dead on match).
Aries 49 Taurus 53 Gemini 58 Cancer 51 Leo 50 Virgo 62 <-- most probable Libra 47 <-- least probable Scorpio 53 Sagittarius 55 Capricorn 56 Aquarius 56 Pisces 49
According to our analysis, you are a Virgo, Aug 23 to Sep 22. But you are certainly not a Libra, Sep 23 to Oct 22. You claim to be a Aquarius, but you are simply in error.
Fucking astrology bullshit.

06:52 pm - No self-harm or cat pictures allowed. You may be interested in an article I've just published in the Consumed Mag Blog: Praise Be To Posh Spice. In short, Consumed is a loose collective of writers with the common bind of consumerism and such. As David Thair, the Supreme Overlord of Consumed puts it: "We don't have very lofty goals, we're not expecting to change the world, we just want to make something good." I can't lay any claim to being any good, but I'm trying.

strategic planning -> Not really my bag. writer -> Ooh, yes please. staff development -> Maybe not. lawyer -> Yes please. architect -> Too much drawing for me. software designer/computer programmer -> Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, spilt beer down it. It's fun, but wouldn't want to do it for a job. My flat mate keeps telling me I'd be brilliant on a Comp Sci course. I prefer something where my political side can go wild on politicians, judges and anybody else. In comp sci, if there's a cock up it's only you and the API writers to blame. Okay, maybe the compiler writers, the debugger writers, anyone who doesn't open source their software. Oh, and Microsoft. They're always to blame. financial analyst -> Blergh. college professor -> Depends on the subject. something academic i could cope with. something practical would send me barmy. photographer -> Again, hobby. defintely not a job. logician -> Logic is sexy. But it's hardly a career. It's a requirement for lots of careers. And it's a definite disadvantage if you want to go on to become a Big Brother contestant. artist -> Hobby, not a job. systems analyst -> Maybe not. neurologist -> No thanks. physicist -> I am teh suck at science. psychologist -> Medicine isn't my scene. research/development specialist -> Depends who for. data base manager -> SELECT * FROM 'jobs' WHERE boss != 'idiot'. Returned rows: 0. chemist, biologist -> Again, I am teh suck at science. investigator -> Depends what sort of 'investigator'. |

You are Julia Kristeva! You were a student of Roland Barthes, and came up with such important notions as intertextuality and abjection. You are a semiotician, psychoanalyst, scholar of literature, and dozens more things. You are not dead.
What 20th Century Theorist are you? brought to you by Quizilla
Cool. Intertextuality r0x0rz my b0x0rz!

03:18 pm - Test result Got my first test result back from Media 1001 course. 32/40 - 80%. Which is surprising when one of my answers was: "The Sun has a 3.5 million daily distribution due to it's easy-to-read articles and even easier-to-read illustrations of topless women." Not only is there a misplaced apostrophe, but I just thought that this sort of cynicism would not be allowed in university exams.
Erk. I hate my grammar in exams. "An increasingly relaxed feel to news broadcasts has been signalled over the last decade with less formal methods of presentation...". What? It's been 'signalled' (wrong spelling as well). What idiot wrote that? Either there is an increasing wave of relaxation or there is not, and it's pretty easy to tell: it's on the god-damn screen! Whoever gave me full marks for that should have their head checked.
I even got full marks on the British Film question which I thought I'd completely crap out on. Still, I'm rather pleased with that. 80% on that test, which means 32% of the module mark. To scrape a pass I have only got to get eight marks in the essay. And it's still possible to get the top grades: A+ and A. That's my kind of exam.

07:58 pm - Off to Bradford tommorow Yep, I'm off on a coach to Bradford tommorow. And it leaves at 8am. Those of you who have yet to enter higher education do not realise what having to be up and ready at 8am means. Because those hall beds are so comfortable. Or something.

01:44 pm - Gender politics After only a month and a bit at University, I am already writing a two thousand word annotated bibliography about Cindy Sherman! I am just working through the electronic resources I've been offered through Academic Search Elite and ZETOC, and once that's done I'm going down to "the dungeon" to read through lots of old copies of academic journals about art, feminism and much more.
Next to me in the study room is a group of feminists complaining about gender politics. University seems to be the best and also the strangest place in the universe, simultaneously.
Erk. Gender politics smells of wee. It's a bit like "politics lite" where instead of having to address real issues people just scream and shout as loudly as they can about 'representation' without actually coming up with any substantial points at all.

12:21 pm - Errr. Now the twats are playing Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé Knowles. Yuck. Other people's taste in "music" disgusts me.
